Woman of Distinction 2013
Cathy Kemp
Alpha Kappa Chapter proudly honors Cathy Springer Kemp as our Woman of Distinction. As a past president of our chapter, Cathy is also the daughter of a past president/charter member (Allene Springer). The phrase “like mother, like daughter” certainly rings true.
With a Bachelor’s degree in education from Athens State College and a Master’s degree from the University of Mississippi and the Administrative Coursework and Licensure certification, Cathy began her professional career as a classroom teacher at her very own alma mater in Starkville, Mississippi. Her 30+ years as an educator has had her serving as a Kindergarten teacher, elementary classroom teacher, as a Student Services Coordinator and a High School Administrator. Currently Cathy serves as Dean of Students for East Mississippi Community College as well as District Coordinator of Recruitment.
Among her many award and accomplishments are the Mississippi Community College Leadership Academy, the Certiport Internet and Computing Certification, and the Tupelo Schools Teacher of the Year.
Always a teacher, Cathy applies her skills every Sunday morning as a Sunday School teacher of adults at First Baptist Church, Starkville, where she also often can be found in the Church library as a member of the Library Committee. Near to her heart also is the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) of which she is a member.
A description of Cathy Kemp would not be complete without mentioning her family. She and husband Terry have three children, Emily Kemp Lesley, Edward Kemp, and Elizabeth Kemp. Probably Cathy’s proudest “Distinction” is being the grandmother of five; Beckett, John Scott, Cathryn, Cline and Edie.
